The face

Grandma J sent a better picture of the face

Now do you see what I mean??? Awkward.

Play now sleep never

Carter has never liked to nap. The past few days, we have started to see his stubborn side more and more. Every time we go to his room to get him in the morning, there he is, standing up in his crib. Since he is constantly on the go now, we set up the pack 'n' play as a play pin (a.k.a. baby jail) in the living room so that I can safely leave the room for a minute or so.

It didn't take him long to figure out how to stand up in the play pin although, with the netting, I'm not exactly sure how he does it.

Now, he has learned how to walk around the edge of it.

Carter's new face

It appeared the other morning during all the commotion.

Kind of shocked, or inquisitive, or just old-man-who-forgot-his-dentures.

I've tried to capture it when it comes out, but the iphone doesn't quite do it justice. Here are a few examples:

Some of you think it's cute. Honestly, it is just kind of awkward.

He used to do this adorable smile when strangers would say hello to him. Now, it's this weird look. The waiter at lunch today didn't give us the same "he is such a cutie" that we're used to. Instead we got a "whooow, there" - clearly he was trying to figure out if something was wrong with Carter or if it was just a face. Agh, it's just a face - his favorite one to make right now.

Our little blessing

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.“ Proverbs 3:5,6

We spent the day together, our little family. We didn't discuss why this happened or even attempt to understand it. What we did discuss was how blessed we are. We have been flooded with cards, emails and calls of support from our friends and family. God made sure that we could handle this. He gave us all of you, he gave us each other and most importantly, he gave us this little guy:

How can you not trust His plans when he has already given us such an amazing blessing?

Mommy needs a break

Between the new baby sucking the life out of me and Carter being on the go 24/7, I really could use a break. Here are just a couple of ways that Carter kept me on my toes today.

Short explanation: I was in the kitchen, he was in the living room. He was out of my sight for maybe 10 seconds when I heard a slapping noise (his hands on the wood floor)

How it's done

Who IS this little person

I don't know what happened to my sweet baby or who this little person is, but there has definitely been an overnight change in our house. This little person is really THINKING and UNDERSTANDING. Check him out as he tackles this toy.

Happy 8 months

8 months ago today my little man was born. I can hardly believe it. You know what that also means? Only 4 months to get your Christmas shopping done!!!

We celebrated his big 8 months by going to the zoo yesterday. We also tried a new hairdo.

The baby elephant was also celebrating - his 1st birthday - so, Carter joined in the fun for about 2 seconds by wearing elephant ears.

Daddy tried to show him the elephant...

But he was more interested in this lady's hair.

By the end of the day, we were all pretty pooped.

What baby jeans SHOULD cost

Although I'm very thrifty (Ok - I'm just cheap), I don't have the patience that my mom and sister have for searching for treasures at garage sales or thrift stores. I still manage however, to get some good deals. You see, I'm a coupon freak. Take these special edition jeans I got for little man.

Sure, the tag says $21.99, but that's not what I paid!

They were on sale 1/2 off at JCPenny. So, I paid $11, right? NO WAY! I pulled out my $10 off any item for $10 or more and spend a hefty $1.07 (tax and all). Yes, this is what I think baby jeans SHOULD cost.

For Auntie

Auntie Lindsey has been BEGGING for footage of Carter's head-bobbing chair dancing. He actually is just imitating mommy (or anyone else who bobs their head at him), but he really gets into it when there is music on.

Just TRY to watch him without bobbing your own head.

The moment YOU've all been waiting for..

...and the one I've been dreading. Carter has been able to get where he wants go for a little while now, but today... today was the day that he realized that he can get wherever he wants to go. I can't sit him down for a second without him wanting to take off! And, of course, he prefers to head towards hope chests and coffee tables instead of open space with teddy bears and soft toys.

Even lazier?

It is possible to be lazier than he has already shown us? Yes. The other day, instead of making the fire engine go by himself, he realized he could just cry and turn to Daddy to make it go for him. The only problem is that he had to go where Daddy wanted him to go.

A rare moment

It is almost impossible to think of a period longer than about 15 seconds without a smile from Carter. So, you could imagine our surprise and our rush to get the camera the other morning when he went into a food coma. There was quite a bit of footage prior to this, but it made the video too long!

Breakfast at the Roberts' house

While mommy prepares breakfast and attempts to get a cup of coffee, Lil' C entertains himself with an assortment of toys and reading material.

Mommy knows he is all done with his solids and ready for a bottle to wash it all down when he gives her this look:

Hey Dad, look what I can do!

Remember how Mom told you I pulled myself all the way to standing last week and that you really need to lower the mattress again?

Well, I did it again today! good news for you, I can only do it if Mom has me sitting since I haven't figured out how to get to sitting from laying down by myself. So, get on it already and lower my mattress, man!

What a happy baby

It is EXHAUSTING to smile and laugh as much as he does

Forget crawling - Carter is driving

More on the debate: really lazy or really smart - you be the judge

It looks like Carter may have outsmarted us again! We have been encouraging him to crawl every day and he has managed to find a way to get around without exerting so much energy as crawling requires.

A little bit of background: Grandma J had a toy very similar to this up at the lake house and Carter seemed to enjoy it so, when Gramma Cupcake was in town, we hit up Babies 'r' us to get one for our house. We passed quite a few on the aisle. There was a lion, a tonka truck, a bunch of others that Carter didn't even notice. Then, I noticed the Sesame Street Elmo Fire Engine complete with fire engine noises and elmo shouting "Look out! Firefighter coming through". As I pulled it to the edge of the shelf (as I had done with all the other options without any acknowledgement from Carter) Gramma could hardly restrain Carter from leaping from her arms. He was drawn to it, couldn't wait to touch it! We decided that this MUST BE THE ONE!

The entire way to the front of the store and during check-out Carter continued to try to reach his beloved fire engine. Still in the box at home, his eyes were just as big as in the store, ready for a ride. Now he just can't get enough of his fire engine. I'm afraid he'll never crawl with this new method of transportation.

FUN WEEKEND

We are having such a fun weekend, and it isn't over yet! We started early with Auntie J hanging with Carter on Thursday while we drove around with cousin Kerrie in hope of persuading her to move to Portland. Carter just LOVED playing with Auntie J. She didn't just give him a toy or two, she gave him the whole basket!!

We then got to go to Detroit Lake and see Uncle Nick who we haven't seen since the beginning of May! Carter couldn't get enough!

We got home from the lake to find Gramma Cupcake and her buddy Tracey in Portland. And so, the fun continues!!

What the ???

I was sitting with Auntie Kellie in the dining room after Carter finished his lunch and happened to glance over at the mirror on the wall from a side view. You can imagine my surprise when I saw two tiny handprints with about a footprint and a half below.

I think Carter and Daddy have some explaining to do.

#2 in da mouth!

With all the talk about how cute he'll look with his two bottom teeth, Carter couldn't wait any longer! Tooth #2 showed itself today!
